This article covers the five businesses where women are the most successful. We’ve written a short review not a custom research paper.
All the figures are from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
A median is used to get an idea of what women are earning in these positions. It is used because an average can seriously alter the appearance of the results when the data is not symmetrically distributed.
This would mean that if we used averages to measure, and there was a small pocket on women in one town that earned significantly less than the rest of the country, then those figures would pull down the rest of the results, making it appear that women in America earn less than they actually do.
A median is better
used in this case.
It takes all of the statistical data and arranges it from the lowest wage to the highest wage in a big list. The median amount is the figure that it in the very centre of that list. The median shows a true middle ground in this case.
When a percentage that women earn compared to men is given, it is not a case of two people doing the same job. For example, John gets $100 and Jill gets $69. It simply compares wages from both sides.
If women are only earning 69% of what men are earning in one profession , then that means they have added up the total wages of all the men.
$1,000,000 is the wage of the women and $1,111,597 is the wage of men in the same field of business.
You can see that women earn 69% of what men are earning.
1.) Pharmacists
Women are the most
successful as pharmacists.
There are more female pharmacists than male pharmacists and in almost all cases, they earn more than men.
Their approximate weekly median earnings are $1,898. This makes their approximate yearly median earnings around $99,000. Women make up 56% of the total USA pharmacy staff.
2.) Lawyers
The second most successful profession for a woman is found in the legal profession.
Their weekly median earnings are $1,631, with an approximate yearly median earning of $85,000.
Sadly, women only make up 34% of American lawyers, however, their high wages may have something to do with how women whom do very well in school are often pushed by their peers, parents and teachers to enter law.
They are then surrounded by a very large male population which encourages them to compete even harder than most and hence, earn those bigger pay checks.
3.) Computer and Information Systems Managers
The third most
successful profession finds a woman’s weekly median earnings at $1,543 with
approximate yearly median earnings of $80,000.
This is still a heavily male dominated profession with only 26% of the whole American staff being women.
Despite their smaller numbers, their wages are comparable to men, earning only 3% less than men, which are surprising, since men make up 74% of the workforce, so one would expect a larger range and hence bigger difference.
4.) Physicians and Surgeons
At number four we have the higher end of the medical field. This just includes female physicians (doctors) and surgeons.
They have weekly median earnings of $1,527 with
approximate yearly median earnings of $79,000.
Women only make up 36% of the profession.
There is a common belief that this is number four because qualified women will tend towards lower paying general practice and pediatric jobs, whereas men tend to take riskier jobs such as brain and plastic surgery.
Subsequently, women in this profession are only earning 79% of what men in the profession earn.
5.) Chief Executives
Number five has weekly median earnings at $1,464, with approximate yearly median earnings of $76,000. Women only make up one quarter of this profession and their being outnumbered means that more men are taking the top higher paid roles, meaning that women are only earning 69% of what men earn in this profession.
