Breaking the mold and striking out on our own can be challenging, especially so for women. It should not be, but it is.
We still face challenges with being seen as equals in the business world.
If you have children, the bulk of childcare probably falls on your shoulders, even if you have the best of partners; your family life and working life are constantly competing for your time.
We need to bust through limiting beliefs and negative conditioning most of us have deep inside regarding money, success and what is possible in life. That is a lot to contend with and we need to develop strategies and tools for staying on track with our dreams.
You Want What You Want for a Reason
Every action we take is because it will bring us something we want.
This applies to everything we do. We take a shower because we want to feel clean. We eat because we want to satisfy our hunger. We watch certain TV shows because we enjoy the story.
Getting what we want is a very strong motivating factor when it comes to achieving our goals, but surprisingly, many people are not living the life they truly want; in most instances, they are very far from it.
Why is this so?
Because they have not gotten to the core of their why.
What Are Your Reasons Behind the Reasons?
There are lots of common reasons to want your own business, such as wanting to work in a field that interests you, be your own boss, have a more flexible schedule, spend more time with your family, have greater freedom and be in control of your income.
These are all great reasons, but they are essentially the surface—I would guess that most everybody would want each and every one of these things, yet most people are someone’s employee at a job they cannot stand or at best, tolerate.
To truly succeed and find the motivation to keep going when things get rough, when the doubt creeps in or when the criticism especially stings, you will need to go deeper.
You will need to figure out the reasons behind the reasons.
These deeper reasons are your true ‘’why.’’
Once you get clear on those, you will never settle for anything less than the exact life you want because you know that anything else will not make you happy. There will be no compromises or trying to convince yourself that you are happy with your current circumstances and that you should just settle for that.
If you want to be your own boss, why?
If you want to work in a field that interests you, why?
If you want a more flexible schedule, why?
If spending more time with your family is important to you, why?
If you want greater freedom, why?
You need to peel back the layers of your reasons to get at your core desires and values.
Closing Thoughts
As someone who has successfully forged a freelance writing career that allows me to live out my core desires and values, such as being able to travel the world when I want and for as long as I want, I feel qualified to speak on the subject of what it takes to live your dreams.
Am I an expert?
Definitely not, but my own experience has taught me a lot that I like to share with others.
I cannot stress the importance of figuring out why you want what you want on the deepest levels. Without this clarity, you will not stick out the tough times that we inevitably face in creating a life by design. You will be tempted to settle for good enough and that is never something you want to do.
